KloakIt 3.0 Active Help

Getting Started

Now that you have installed KloakIt 3.0, let's get your hands dirty and learn how to use it. I think you will begin to smile as you realize just how easy KloakIt 3.0 will make your website promotion chores.

How do I make an entrance page?

Making a new entrance page is very simple. First, click on the button that says "Make New Entrance Pages". You will see two text areas on the next page. The top area is where you should begin typing your keyword phrases, one prase per line. The bottom area is where the phrases you already have pages for are displayed.

Go ahead and type three or four keyword phrases in the first box. My suggestion to you is that your phrases shouldn't be too long... two to four words is best. Then click on the button that says "Create Entrance Pages".

A notification that the pages were created will be displayed and you will be taken back to the main control panel. For each phrase you entered, one entrance page was created. If you installed KloakIt 3.0 in your home directory, they will have a URL something like: http://www.yourdomain.com/keyword-phrase-1.htm . If you installed KloakIt 3.0 in a subdirectory then they will have a URL like http://www.yourdomain.com/subdirectory/keyword-phrase-1.htm .

Note: the work "sitemap" is reserved. Do not use this word alone as a keyword. The sitemap page is a "hallway" page which will display a list of links to all your cloaked pages only. See How to create a hallway page.

Secondary Keywords

On the main control panel is a list of secondary keywords. These keywords are used by the various entrance page templates to generate your entrance pages. Go ahead and type all the keywords that relate to your site here. Put one keyword phrase on each line. Do not repeat the keywords. Once your list is complete, click on "Save Secondary Keywords".

Testing KloakIt 3.0

Now you are ready to test KloakIt 3.0 and get an idea of how it works in real life. On the main control panel, you will see a text area that displays the pages you currently have cloaked. Copy one of the URLs and paste it into the "location" area of your browser.

You should be shown your "normal" page. This is what you entered when you first installed KloakIt 3.0 and were asked what page you wanted normal surfers to see. I call this your "normal" page.

Click your back button and then click on one of the search engine names over the "Modify Robot Lists" button. Then click on the "Modify Robot List" button. A text area will be displayed that contains the I.P. addresses and host names for Infoseek. Above that you will also see your current I.P. address. Copy your I.P. address and add it to the top of the list. Make sure there are no extra spaces in your address. Then click the button that says "Save List".

KloakIt 3.0 now thinks you are a search engine robot. Paste the same cloaked URL as before into your browser and check out the results. You will be shown the entrance page for that particular keyword phrase.

You should now understand the basic principles behind how KloakIt 3.0 works. Don't forget to remove your I.P. address from the number 1 robot list.

Different entrance pages for different search engines

Running through the above tutorial, you probably noticed that there are eight different sets of robot lists to choose from. In order, they represent Infoseek, Alta Vista, Lycos, Inktomi, Excite, Google, NorthernLight, a miscellaneous list and two custom lists. The reason I have broken the search engine robots into ten separate lists is because that way, KloakIt can display different entrance pages to different search engines using the same URL.

To see the entrance page for Alta Vista, simply enter your I.P. address into the Alta Vista list (make sure your I.P. isn't in any other robot list), and paste a cloaked URL into your browser. Don't forget to remove your I.P. address after the test.

Different templates for different search engines

Going along with the different robot lists for the various search engines... there are also different templates for different search engine. Each robot list has its own template.

I recommend that you edit each of these templates to fit with your website. KloakIt does come with templates of its own, but they were meant to be guides to help you design your own templates. You'll find instructions on how to edit the templates here. For your reference, I have placed a sample Inktomi template here.

Submitting to search engines

What I like to do is put a link to one of my cloaked pages on a page that has already been indexed by the major search engines. That way, the spiders find the cloaked pages on their own. Otherwise, you could always submit some or all of your cloaked pages manually. The KloakIt control panel provides you with a list of all your cloaked URLs.
