Introduction

Welcome to KloakIt 3.0 Active Help. Here you will find complete instructions for installing and using KloakIt 3.0. Even if you aren't familiar with CGI script installation, KloakIt 3.0 will be a breeze to install and configure. However, you should already be familiar with HTML and knowing about FTP will make things a little simpler, too.

KloakIt is a program that runs on your web server. Your server must use the Unix operating system and be running Apache web server software. If you aren't sure what kind of software your server is running, ask your server's administrator.

What is cloaking?

Web page cloaking is used to protect your search engine rankings by hiding the HTML source code that attained your rankings. A cloaking program shows HTML code optimized for good search engine placement to search engine robots and hides that code from regular surfers.

There are many techniques used to cloak web pages. The best technique detects the I.P. address of viewer of a web page and tries to determine whether the viewer is a search engine robot or a regular surfer.

An I.P. address is the numerical address of each computer on the internet. Every computer on the internet (including yours right now), has an I.P. address assigned to it. All search engine robots have I.P. addresses assigned to them, too.

Cloaking software compares the I.P. address of the viewer of a cloaked page with a list of known robot addresses. If it finds a match, it shows the robot the optimized web page. If no match is found, the optimized web page isn't shown to the web surfer.

What is an entrance page?

An entrance page is a special web page designed to get your website good search engine placement. It is usually loaded with keywords you pick to attract people who would be interested in your site. Many techniques are used to create entrance pages, including using Meta tags, image alt text, headlines, etc.

Different search engines use different methods when deciding what kind of placement your entrance pages should receive. It makes sense then, that you develop a different kind of entrance page for each major search engine.

Another important thing to consider when designing entrance pages is keywords and keyword phrases. If your entrance page is optimized for too many different keywords, it won't receive good placement for any of them. For this reason, it is good thinking to limit each entrance page to being optimized for one keyword phrase.

The two paragraphs above lead to the conclusion that if you have a lot of keywords you could end up with a monstrous number of entrance pages. With eight or so major search engines, if you have a list of maybe 20 keyword phrases you want to get good placement for, you could have around 160 entrance pages!

Don't let this scare you. KloakIt 3.0 generates your entrance pages automatically. All you have to do is tell it the keywords for which you want good placement.

To Register or Not To Register?

Should you register KloakIt? Well, I certainly think so! Here are the differences between the registered version and the unregistered version:

  • The unregistered version is unsupported. I offer email support to registered users, but not to people who don't register.
  • The unregistered version will show pop-up ads whenever a websurfer visits one of your cloaked pages. Similar to a free hosting service, these pop-up ads let me defray my costs for letting you use my program for free. The pop-up ads will not let people know you are using KloakIt... they are discreet. The registered version does not have pop-up ads.
